Job Summary:

The Kamloops Partner Assisted Learning (KPAL) program is a free, one-to-one, adult tutoring program. The KPAL Coordinator is responsible for promoting the program, recruiting and assessing low literacy adult learners, recruiting and training volunteer tutors, matching and supporting learners with trained adult tutors. This position works in partnership with Literacy in Kamloops (LinK), a community literacy table. The KPAL coordinator will report to and take direction from LinK through the LOC.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Coordination of the Volunteer One-to-One Adult Tutoring Program

Volunteer tutor training and support

  • Recruit and orient tutors
  • Provide one day tutor training sessions when needed for new tutors
  • Provide in-service tutor training sessions for volunteers
  • Provide recognition and support for volunteers
  • Arrange a space for tutors and learners to meet
  • Maintain and expand the learning resources collection, order books and materials as required

Learner assessment, support and matches

  • Recruit and orient learners
  • Interview and assess potential learners
  • Outline educational plans for learners which tutors will implement
  • Match learners with appropriate tutors
  • Provide ongoing support and encouragement for learners, tutors and matches
  • Monitor learners’ progress
  • Review tutor reports each month
  • Conduct program evaluations in conjunction with tutors and learners

Literacy and Essential Skills Awareness for Service Providers

  • Foster in-kind support for KPAL and build community partnerships
  • Referrals to KPAL, School District #73 – Street School, TRU Programs and other service providers

Administrative and Other

  • Publicize and market through the local media
  • Work collaboratively with other training agencies
  • Prepare monthly reports
  • Present progress, challenges and ideas at LinK meetings
  • Complete summative evaluation of program

Education and/or Experience

  • A degree in a field related to education, social work, psychology, sociology or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Information

A criminal record and Criminal Records Review Act check is required

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills as well as planning and organizational skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
