Courtwork Program

Purpose of the Program:

 

The Courtwork program is a volunteer based program that provides a range of assistance to help people who are involved in the court system understand and navigate the court process by:  

• Liaising with legal aid, lawyers, and courthouse personnel
• Orienting people to the courtroom and courtroom procedures
• Connecting people dealing with family or criminal matters with a Duty Counsel lawyer
• Assisting with the process of applying for a Pardon
• Referring people to community agencies and legal resources   

At no time do volunteers give legal advice

 

Courtwork Volunteers are available for:

• Criminal Court matters - Monday &Thursday mornings
• Family Court matters - Monday & Wednesday mornings  

 

How to find the Courtwork Volunteers:  

 

Look for the information table on the 2nd & 3rd floor of the Kamloops Law Courts at 455 Columbia St. 

Requirements to Become a Courtwork Volunteer:  

• Interest in the Criminal Justice System
• Non-judgmental attitude
• Commitment to volunteering
• Ability to communicate with a diverse range of people

Pardon Project:

Staff will explain the pardon process and assist with form completion including:   

 

• Completing a Criminal Record Check  
• Obtaining Fingerprints  
• Obtaining Court Documents  
• Applying for a Pardon  

A Pardon:

• Proves that a person has reformed their life from criminal activity 
• Removes some of the limitations of having a criminal record that can interfere with a persons career, job, volunteer opportunities, professional standing and travel 
• Seals a criminal record
